Combat mechanics, stress and breakdown

Last reviewed · Editor: btiger · Public-source guide.

CZN battles revolve around paying AP for cards while managing enemy actions, the team's health and each combatant's stress. A successful turn is not just maximum damage: breaking or shielding at the right time can protect the next turn. The linked public guides describe the systems; no personal test run is claimed.

AP, EP, targeting and enemy actions

Game8's beginner guide and Prydwen's combat guide explain the core distinction: cards spend AP and Ego Skills spend EP. Enemies telegraph actions and have counters affected by card play. Read the target and counter before chaining actions; a low-cost utility card can still advance an enemy toward acting.

Stress and Mental Breakdown

Taking health damage builds stress; a filled gauge can cause Mental Breakdown. Game8 and Prydwen agree that a breakdown replaces a combatant's normal cards and reduces the team's maximum health by roughly one third for that combatant. Playing recovery cards helps restore control. These mechanics explain why a deck can stop working even with damage cards still available.

  • Use shielding to prevent health damage and the associated stress.
  • Break enemy Tenacity or use rest/healing options to manage accumulated pressure.
  • After a breakdown, account for recovery cards and reduced health instead of continuing the original damage sequence unchanged.

Deep Trauma, corrupted data and Link Crash

Game8 describes breakdown persisting between battles and Link Crash when the party collapses. Its Save Data guide and Prydwen's mode guide distinguish counseling, which preserves affected data, from memory deletion, which does not. Before selecting a recovery option, understand whether the run's loadout will be preserved.

Agony: use current wording carefully

Agony is a turn-end damage-over-time effect. Game8's older explainer describes separate applications and unlimited stacking; Prydwen's effects dictionary, updated October 26, 2026, describes a capped stack effect with different decay wording. These accounts conflict. This guide does not combine them into a fabricated universal formula or promise unlimited stacking.

Fracture is not exclusive to Hilde

The published Season 4 developer note describes Arabella applying Fracture as part of a DoT kit. Calling it Hilde's exclusive effect would therefore be misleading. This is a single underlying developer source, read through CZN.gg's mirror. No unverified multiplier or stacking formula is supplied.

Epiphany and Potential nodes

Epiphanies add or modify cards during a run. A Combatant Epiphany, a card upgrade and a Divine bonus are related steps rather than interchangeable labels. Potential progression can affect the opening build; details and the community use of Latent are explained separately.

Prism Module versus a combat upgrade

Game8's Prism Module guide says it restores card animation and adds no stats. This cosmetic distinction is single-source here. A Prism Module is not an Epiphany and does not substitute for a gameplay upgrade.

Questions

Why did my normal cards disappear?

A combatant in Mental Breakdown has normal cards replaced by recovery cards. Manage stress and play the relevant recovery cards to restore control.

Is Fracture only Hilde's effect?

No. The developer preview explicitly describes Arabella applying Fracture. Exact current formulas are not established here.
